Job Description
A Registered ICU Nurse (Intensive Care Unit Nurse) plays a critical role in the care and management of patients who are critically ill or in a life-threatening condition. Their functions include:
- Patient Monitoring: Continuously monitor vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, etc.) using advanced equipment to detect any changes in a patient's condition.
- Administering Medications and Treatments: Administer prescribed medications, IV fluids, and blood products. They are also responsible for managing complex treatments like ventilator support, dialysis, and other specialized interventions.
- Collaboration with Healthcare Team: Work closely with doctors, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans for critically ill patients.
- Providing Direct Patient Care: Offer direct care, including wound management, positioning, hygiene, and feeding. ICU nurses are also responsible for patient comfort and emotional support for patients and their families.
- Emergency Response: Respond promptly to emergencies such as cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, or sudden changes in patient condition, often being the first line of intervention.
- Patient Education: Educate patients and their families about the patient's condition, treatment options, and post-ICU care needs.
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate, up-to-date patient records, documenting all assessments, interventions, and outcomes.
- Infection Control: Ensure adherence to infection control protocols to prevent hospital-acquired infections, given the high-risk nature of ICU settings.
The ICU nurse must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), complete requisite training, and possess specialized knowledge in critical care nursing. They are often required to work long shifts, including nights and weekends, due to the 24/7 nature of ICU care.
