Full Job Description
Our client in the Agricultural sector is currently receiving
applications for the role of Senior Agronomist. The Senior Agronomist
will be responsible for all the agronomic aspects of crop production,
including but not limited to the production calendar, field
allocation, input selection and preparation, soil fertility and water
management, pest and disease management, crop scouting and yield
outcome.
Responsibilities
● Develop the
agronomic plan for the season, including key metrics to assess.
● Develop Integrated Pest and Soil Fertility Management
Programs including the establishment of basic economic injury levels
and economic thresholds of applications.
● Drive the
technical operations of the farm such as: soil testing and analysis,
input selection and trials, land preparation, planting, pesticide and
fertilizer applications, crop scouting and harvesting, in close
collaboration with the Head of Farm Operations to deliver an optimal
minimum yield of 3MT/Ha for rice.
● Produce a weekly
log of applications and assessments, including cost/ benefit
analyses.
● Plan and assess the efficacy of machinery
operations for land preparation, planting, fertiliser and pesticide
applications, irrigation, harvesting, etc.
● Plan and
conduct trials on improved varieties, fertility, and irrigation and
cultivation techniques.
● Evaluate current and
historical farm data to assess the efficacy of: plant nutrition and
soil fertility practices, crop protection products, cultivation and
irrigation techniques.
● Manage the Junior Agronomists
to effectively implement the agronomic plan.
● Liaise
daily with the Head of Farm Operations, Equipment Operators and Farm
Operatives.
Requirements
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Science or Agriculture. Post
graduate degree in Crop/Soil Science or Professional Agronomy
certification is preferred
- A minimum of 5 years
experience in crop farming agronomy. Business experience is an
advantage
- Expertise in soil fertility and crop
nutrition
- Expertise in crop protection
- Commercial experience in rice and soybean/maize farming
- Knowledge of agro-forestry practices a plus
- Strong problem solving and decision-making skills
- Strong data analysis skills, including assessment of economic
impact of agronomic decisions
- Excellent communication
skills (written & verbal)
